The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after getting a report about the accident at 3:50 p.m.

The sheriff’s office says calls to 911 reported a vehicle traveling eastbound from this location with rear tire damage and emitting smoke from the back.

Deputies located the vehicle at Illinois 13 at Greenbriar Road and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle continued eastbound traveling at low speeds while ignoring audible siren and emergency lights.

The vehicle’s passenger rear tire was observed to be “locked up”, appeared broken, and was emitting lots of smoke and burnt rubber. The driver was having difficulty staying on the roadway and the vehicle was driven into and out of the median several times.

Deputies were able to see that the driver was the only person inside. The driver looked at deputies and appeared “not to see them and appeared to be unaware of his surroundings.”

A rolling road block was used to stop the vehicle near the intersection of Illinois Route 13 and Division Street in Carterville. The maneuver was successfully conducted without damage to patrol cars or any further damage to the vehicle failing to stop.

The driver was ordered out of the vehicle and seemed confused. Deputies had to physically remove the driver’s seat belt and assist him from the vehicle.

During this initial conversation it became apparent that the driver was suffering from a medical emergency. An ambulance was summoned and it was discovered the driver was suffering from a diabetic condition.

The driver was transported to an area hospital and is reported to be in good condition.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Carterville Police Department for their assistance in this matter.
