EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU (WMIX) – A man accused of shooting a Granite City police officer was killed in southern Illinois after a chase and shootout with police.

Donald Friese was wanted in connection with a Tuesday night incident when Granite City Police responded to a disturbance call.

Police said a scuffle ensued and shots rang out. An officer and Friese were both hit, but he got away. The officer has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Friese was then located Wednesday night near East Cape Girardeau before he was killed in a shootout.

Friese was previously convicted on a second-degree murder charge connected to a deadly car crash. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, but was released early.
