DU QUOIN – The City of Du Quoin is pleased to announce the successful allocation of $242,906.64 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to reinforce critical infrastructure.

During the City Council meeting on Monday, Jan 8, Du Quoin Emergency Management Agency Coordinator, Doug Clark, announced that these funds will be dedicated to installing emergency generators at Du Quoin Fire Station 2 and eight essential wastewater lift stations.

Administered by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Hazard Mitigation Grant represents a significant investment in the City’s resilience and emergency response capabilities. This grant covers 75 percent of the expected total project costs, with the city committing to cover the remaining expenses, bringing the approximate project cost to $323,875.00.

One emergency generator is strategically designated for placement at Du Quoin Fire Station 2, which also serves as the City’s Emergency Operations Center and enhances the operational capabilities of the facility. Additionally, generators will be installed at lift stations located on West South Street, West Park Street, West Cole Street, American Way, North Line Street, Greenwood Avenue, East Jackson Street, and Meadowbrook Lane.

Clark expressed the significance of this grant, stating, “The Hazard Mitigation Grant marks a crucial step forward in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Since planned and unplanned power outages can be unpredictable, installing emergency generators at these locations strengthens our ability to respond effectively during emergencies and ensures the uninterrupted functioning of critical infrastructure, safeguarding the continuity of essential services.”

The City of Du Quoin is looking forward to working in collaboration with FEMA, IEMA, and other stakeholders as we move into the next phase of the grant project. This initiative aligns with the City’s ongoing dedication to proactively addressing potential risks and ensuring the safety and resilience of its residents.
