BENTON – A man is facing multiple charges following an incident with Benton Police in the 400 block of North Main in Benton Monday night.

According to Benton Police Chief Chris Funkhouser, 49-year-old Chad D. Hutchinson is charged with Aggravated Assault, Reckless Conduct, Criminal Damage to Property, Resisting a Peace Officer and Jaywalking.

Around 11:40 p.m., Benton Police responded to a call in the 400 block of North Main to a report of a male subject that had jumped out into traffic of an oncoming Benton Fire Truck responding to a fire emergency.

Upon arrival, officers saw a male subject later identified as Hutchinson walking in the turn lane on North Main carrying a long object in his hand, later identified as a 3 cell Mag lite flashlight.

Officers ordered Hutchinson to stop but he continued walking, ignoring their command. Officers again gave a command for Hutchinson to drop the flashlight and Hutchinson refused to drop the flashlight. An officer attempted to take Hutchinson to the ground and when doing so, Hutchinson swung the metal flashlight in an attempt to strike the officer. An officer deployed a taser at Hutchinson which did not have any affect on him. Officers then deployed OC spray. After a brief struggle Hutchinson was taken into custody.

Officers requested an ambulance to respond and decontaminate Hutchinson from the OC spray.

Hutchinson was taken to Franklin Hospital for treatment and was then taken to the Franklin County Jail upon release where he is being held on the charges we mentioned earlier.

A report came into the Benton Police Department shortly after in which a victim reported Hutchinson had struck the windshield of his vehicle with a flashlight causing damage.
