MT. VERNON (WMIX) – The Red Cross is assisting eight people who were displaced Monday following a fire at their apartment building in Mt. Vernon.

According to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, they responded just before noon Monday to an apartment in the 700 block of South 18th, where a resident reportedly left food cooking on the stove when she left the apartment. Upon her return, she found the kitchen of her first-floor apartment on fire.

Firefighters say the fire burned up to the second floor apartment above, but they were able to keep the blaze from spreading any further.

However, smoke and water damage was spread through all six units of the building, resulting in eight residents being temporarily displaced.

Mt. Vernon Police were on scene before firefighters arrived and were able to get everyone safely out of the apartments. No injuries were reported.
