SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – The National Weather Service in Paducah says the Excessive Heat Warning continues until 8 tonight for Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, Wabash, Perry, Franklin, Hamilton, White, Jackson, Williamson, Saline and Gallatin counties. A Heat Advisory will be in effect for these counties from 8 tonight to 7 Saturday night.

For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 110 to 115 expected. For the Heat Advisory, heat index values of 105 to 110 are expected.

Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

A Heat Advisory is in effect until 7 Saturday night for Union, Johnson, Pope, Hardin, Alexander, Pulaski and Massac counties

Heat index values of 105 to 110 are expected.

During this heat wave, you should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. If you can bring your pets inside to stay cool, do so. If not, then make sure they have plenty of fresh water and a shady spot to escape the heat.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
