MT. VERNON – A 19-year-old Mt. Vernon man is scheduled to go to trial Tuesday in Jefferson County Court on a charge of armed violence.

Jaylen Smith has been held in the Jefferson County Jail on $100,000 bond since Mt. Vernon Police arrested him in Mt. Vernon.

According to police reports, Smith was arrested in December for alleged armed violence, manufacture with the intent to deliver between 1 and 15 grams of cocaine, possessing a stolen firearm and two violations of bail bond.

He was ultimately charged with Class X felony armed violence.

Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense indicated they were prepared for trial during a hearing last week, but they’re scheduled to meet in Judge Jerry Crisel’s chambers first thing Tuesday morning.
